Seales vs Attorney-General
Lecretia Seales was diagnosed with brain cancer. In 2011 she was ‘given’ only weeks to live, but lived a full and active live for a further three-and-a-half years.
In 2015 she appealed to the Wellington High Court to allow her to receive assisted suicide or euthanasia from her doctor.
Justice Collins denied her request and confirmed that such actions would be against the Crimes Act.
On the same day the ruling was made public, Lecretia died peacefully at home from her illness. Her death was not the prolonged and painful death she feared. Apparently she was still able to smile and interact with people till the end.
